Twenty herds situated across the country, from the far west of Cornwall to the east of Sussex, and north into Northumberland, and each challenged by a different environment, entered the South Devons’ National Herd Competition in 2016, which this year was judged by James Eustice, Philip Tully and Robert Dimond.
Earlier this year the Society decided to offer to its members the independent measuring service managed by NBDC (National Bovine Data Centre). Council agreed to offer the first 20 herds a financial incentive of £100 each, and already those 20 herd places have been filled. The Society looks forward to seeing a roll-out of the service, which will enable herds to benchmark and assess their female breeding stock, at the same time as providing potential buyers a valuable insight into breeding potential.
The year 2016 marks 125 years since the South Devon Herd Book Society was incorporated, and the breed has plenty to celebrate as it continues to expand across the country, bringing its benefits to beef farmers who previously knew little about this gentle, high performance breed.
